The Great American Pastime

"Baseball, to me, is still the national pastime because it is a summer game.  I feel that almost all Americans are summer people, that summer is what they think of when they think of their childhood.  I think it stirs up an incredible emotion within people.  ~Steve Busby, in Washington Post, 8 July 1974

"Little league baseball is a good thing. It keeps the parents off of the streets. " -Yogi Berra

In the case of Opening Day, it got the parents ON the streets...cheering for all of the Londonderry teams.
The original opening day was scheduled for the week before but it was cold and rainy and we all breathed a sigh of relief when it was rescheduled to this past Saturday.  Cole had actually already had his first game before the parade but the parade was still so exciting!  Cole was proud to be walking in it and we couldn't wait to see him.  But, oh, we had to be there at 7:15 AM(!!) and that was rough.  Mimi and Grandpa came over too and Cole was glad they were there.  Grammy and PawPaw were also in town for the Miss NH pageant so they came over afterwards for Cole's game.  So far Cole has had someone (besides just B, me, and Charlotte) to watch all his games and tonight he asked me who was coming to his game. I told him Mimi was coming and he was very pleased!   He is so proud!  Tonight he also told me he was the fastest runner on his team. (hummm, must work on modesty!)  He is pretty speedy and so intense when he is running. You can just imagine what is going on in his mind while he is running around the bases.

Anyway,  the morning of the parade my contacts somehow clouded up and I literally could not see anything clearly at all. It was horrible. I'm surprised I got any pictures at all. As it is, I missed taking a pic of Cole's friend Ryan. :(  I only got Caden because he was smiling right at me and calling my name.  Then Sam because I was standing right next to Abby. :)

Mimi and Charlotte checked out the fire truck before the parade starts.  It made it so exciting!
(Did I say that already?!) :)

Our cheering section.  Abby and I cheered for every team, whether we knew them or not. One coach walked by and said, "Thank you! That is what the parade is all about!"

He just kept waving and waving at me. It was so cute.
About 5 people were missing from his team. I am not sure if it was because it was so cold, it was early, or it was April vacation!

Little announcements like, "Get good grades, kids, and listen to your elders."  I'm not sure why the random words of wisdom but it was good advice nevertheless. :)
National Anthem then the first pitch for baseball and softball and then it was "PLAY BALL!!"

These are from the Wednesday game. I (gasp!) didn't bring my camera to the Saturday game.  I figure there is only so many pics I can take of Cole batting and running and catching.  I'll probably bring it again a couple more times towards the end.

Tonight Cole asked me when they start to keep score in baseball.  I told him next year. :)

I never tire of little kids in their uniforms! It is just so darn cute!

I am jealous of all your sunny days at the field! Aside from Saturday's game which we couldn't watch since we were in NJ, it has rained.. I brought my camera to one, but had to keep it wrapped up in a bag the whole time! For now I will just revel in your photos.

I just love the close up of Cole in his batting helmet!

What a great album that Cole can look back on to see how he started in baseball. He does look Super Cute, like he's having fun and also looks intense when watching a teammate up at bat!
I'll get there as much as I can! I'm so proud of you, Cole!
